| No. 9 Abbey Green appears to have been a Lodging
House and would probably have been of the type built at Hotwells, Bristol,
during the late 1800's, two of which were known as Jacob's Wells Buildings
and Brandon Buildings (a photograph of which appears in the Reece Winstone
book "Bristol as it was 1950-1953", plate 28). These dwellings
were built essentially to improve the living conditions of the poor. The
complete Census Return for the premises lists all the names of the occupants
and all are described as being "Lodger", "Wife of Lodger",
"Son of Lodger", etc. The adjacent building, No. 10, was the Crystal
Palace Tavern. It is still there! |
