No. 9 Abbey Green appears to have been a Lodging House and would probably have been of the type built at Hotwells, Bristol, during the late 1800's, two of which were known as Jacob's Wells Buildings and Brandon Buildings (a photograph of which appears in the Reece Winstone book "Bristol as it was 1950-1953", plate 28). These dwellings were built essentially to improve the living conditions of the poor. The complete Census Return for the premises lists all the names of the occupants and all are described as being "Lodger", "Wife of Lodger", "Son of Lodger", etc. The adjacent building, No. 10, was the Crystal Palace Tavern. It is still there!

It is thought that the above Margaret WHITING was the daughter of John and Marianne (aka Mary Ann) Cuff WHITING. Married in 1849, they had a daughter, Margaret Cuff WHITING, in 1860.
John WHITING died in 1868, about 3 years before the 1871 census was taken.
It is also thought that the alleged wife of John TIPNEY was, in fact, Mary Ann WHITING. It was quite common for a widow who had a child, or children, to simply live with another partner, and become known as his wife although unmarried.
Margaret Cuff WHITING was certainly still alive at this time, and married John Joseph WALSH in 1881.
Margaret WHITING’s given relationship to John TIPNEY – “daughter (in) law” – is misleading. To be a daughter-in-law would mean that one of his daughters married a man with the surname of WHITING, and they had a daughter in about 1858.
The information in the census indicates that John TIPNEY was born circa 1829. If he then married at about 21 years of age – i.e. circa 1850 –, and had a son, then this son could not be the father of Margaret WHITING, who, on the above information, would have been born circa 1858.
However, Mary Ann WHITING did re-marry – in 1878 – and this is reflected in the Family Tree
